Why is sovereignty important to political science

Sovereignty is the government's power over a territory. Without Sovereignty, politics would be just a bunch of men squabbling, who had no real effect over anything. In modern terms, governments do not like their soverignty being touched because if they lose some territory, they lose some power, and eventually may be replaced with another government.
