Scales are the foundation of learning to play musical compositions in any key. They also strenthen one's knowledge of the locaion of notes and where they are located on the keyboard of the piano, organ and other keyboard instruments

scales are the foundations of the different keys, and most runs are just scales that start on different notes

Well I can tell you right now that being a music student myself, learning that music stuff helps. I play the piano and I learn all by ear/YouTube. (Ha.) But I'm in Chorus and learned a thing or two about the scales and such and it deffinately helps me while I'm playing piano or while I'm trying to teach someone how to play a song.
