Africa is a country. Northern Africa is referred to ask Africa. Granted Africa is the name of the continent, people generally only specify South Africa apart from (Northern) Africa.

Not entirely true. There is a country called Central African Republic and Nothern Africa, and the entire continent of Africa for that matter, was never one country it was a provincial region. There was a Roman province of Africa but I doubt that people are referring to that when they mistake Africa to be a country. I'd say it was ignorance.
You misunderstood. I was simply saying that it's not so much that people think Africa's a country, but they just call Northern Africa, Africa, out of laziness.
people refer to Africa as a country as it has so many countries in it, it is easier to refer to it as one. north america for instance has few countries and all of them have a large impact on the world. but since Africa has so many countries and barely any of them have impact on the world people just call it "Africa".
