The moon is facing the earth with the same face all the time. It is in shadow when
a) it's new moon (moon is close to the sun's position in the sky, i.e. it gets sun rays on her back)
b) it's full moon and a moon eclipse occurs (it crosses the earth's shadow on her trajectory around the earth)
