When does one determine when they my be in ketosis when on the Atkins diet?

I have purchased ketone test strips to measure ketones, but I am actually unsure of what the measurements are indicated, is one in ketosis when the strips register negative or what?

The test strips should darken to show the presence of ketone bodies - the darker, the more you are in ketosis. More is not necessarily better. Ketones can be hard on the kidneys. Just try to keep the test strip somewhere in the light to medium pink. and remember, true ketosis is acheived by your body burning fats for energy. your brain still needs a few carbs to function. Once you are in ketosis, try to make the carbs you eat count - non-starchy vegetables (not potatoes, beans, grains) like green beans, zuchinni, tomatoes, broccoli, salad stuff.

Too many people think Atkins means meat, meat, meat, and fat. Put olive oil on your salad, some butter on your veggies, but remember, you want to be in ketosis to burn your body fat initially, not just the fats and oils you consume.

Also, the initial weight you lose is mainly water while your body adjusts - great morale boost, but not true fat loss - and this water weight will return in days if you switch to carb based diet. Good luck.
