Was the diesel engine made before the civil war?

Asked Apr 07, 2010
No. Rudolf Diesel (the inventer of the diesel engine) got a patent for his very first design in 1898, and the civil war took place between 1861 and 1865, so clearly the civil war came first. I mean heck, Rudolf was born in 1858, He was 7 when the civil war ended, let alone started.
