Why does 3D Studio Max cost$ so much?
It took the company many people many many hours to write the program. It's not an easy thing to do. The company has to pay those people. Furthermore, they have to pay these people more as they write things to fix bugs and update the program. Also, you don't have many options besides 3D Studio Max, so they are able to charge a lot because there aren't many cheaper alternatives, and the cheaper alternatives there are don't have the same functionality.
