How to take the shine down on a freshly painted small surface?

I painted a lamp base with a satin paint, but it has dried much glossier than I wanted. Is there a way to tone down the shine now that it has dried? I was thinking sandpaper or steel wool, which I fear would scratch it, or a chemical, like lighter fluid, or maybe vinegar. Any solution would be appreciated.

Sand paper and steel wool would indeed scratch it, and it would look horrible. If you try something chemical it would look very weird because it's nearly impossible to apply it all perfectly evenly, so it would look blotchy.

Sorry I don't have a real answer for you, but I just wanted to warn you of those risks.
