Explain this term "epiphany"-in literature?

we have a moment of epiphany in Heart of Darkness,when Kurts is dying,
also when Marlow telling a lie to Kurts` funce.

Explain this to me?
i dont know what does epiphany mean,that`s why i couldn`t understand the above!
