What test applies stress beyond what a cable encounters under normal use

If you perform an overload test, you overload the cable beyond it's acceptable ranges to test it's outer boundaries. Basically, most cables can withstand more than it says on the box or wire, but not for infinite amounts of time, so if you overpower a cable, you can see how well it will hold up.
