Reformatting compaq windows 98

Our Compaq computer with Windows 98 defaults to 16 bit color. We thought that reformatting might solve the problem; we don't have the drivers. Is this a good idea?

Well, reformatting any hard drive requires an operating system disk so you can re-load the program.

Reformatting removes the old program and if you don't already have the Win98 OS disk I would recommend that you buy the Win XP since MS doesn't support any win 98 software problems anymore.

But first, the only color setting above 16 bit is 32 bit and your video card or driver may not support 32 bit so a reformat won't help at all.

That being said, my answer to your question is, NO! It's not a good idea...
